Have you been to Knott’s Soak City? We actually haven’t ever, so the kids are beyond excited to soak up the scene, particularly with the toasty temps lately. If you’re interested in going, I have the scoop on what’s ahead.

Of all the things to do with kids in Southern California, water parks top the list with kids (and without Wild Rivers around this year, OC kids will be high and dry looking for water fun). So what’s to do at the Park? Lots!

Knott’s Soak City, a 13-acre water park adjacent to Knott’s Berry Farm Theme Park, offers a wave pool or you can chill in the lazy river. For adventurers, there’s 17 slides (speed, tube, and body), or you can amp up the thrills at the Pacific Spin, which drops riders into a 75 foot, six story funnel. OMG, I know my wild childs will drag me on this.

And you may want to consider a Season Pass. With a Knott’s Soak City Season Pass, you’ll have unlimited visits during the 2013 season. You can go for the day or stay for an hour.

Last month, our family visited Universal Studios Hollywood and we really had such a fantastic time. The kids had never been; they’d only longingly admired the park from afar, in commercials. With Spring Breaks ahead and the weather warming up, it’s a prime time to make plans to head north and play.

The biggest tip I can share with you is the Front of Line Pass that rocks! Seriously. The star-treatment passes are approximately $130 each (includes one-day park admission); you’ll have nearly no waits for any ride.

Our favorite ride was The Simpsons™ a revolutionary virtual roller coaster that was a riot. There’s also Revenge of the Mummy–The Ride, which is an actual indoor roller coaster. Plus, there’s Shrek 4-D™, the King Kong 360 3-D experience and much more. Some photos from our day below to put you in the mood.

Even my husband and I felt a bit like kids as we experienced the park with our kids. The last time he and I had visited was when we were in our early 20′s and just dating. So it was wild to be there, two decades later with three kiddos.

The kids got a big kick out of the legendary Studio Tour that offers an upclose look at how Hollywood movies are made. They also loved the Special Effects Stage that shows you the secrets behind the blockbuster movies.

After the day of fun, we wrapped the outing under the lights of Universal City Walk with a bite at Hard Rock Café.

The How to Train Your Dragon Live Spectacular is a never-before-seen production that opened Thursday and only runs for seven shows through Sunday at The Honda Center. We went, we saw, the kids were slayed (so to speak). Here’s a look from the night. In a nutshell: Poetic music. Cinematic visuals. Strong story. And the dragons were massive. This shot below from the end of the evening as the show wrapped.

The event, which was critically acclaimed in Australia and New Zealand, was produced by the storytellers at DreamWorks Animation, and Global Creatures, the masterminds behind the international phenomenon Walking with Dinosaurs, the #1 grossing world tour of 2010.

The show features more than a dozen dragons, some with wingspans of up to 46 feet, as well as Viking warriors and circus artists and acrobats.

Now do I know how the dragons did all those wild pupperty movements and the technical wizardry of the magnetic floor and more? I haven’t the slightest. Which makes it all the more fantastical really. My kids also saw the Dinos Spectacular in 2010 and said that they liked this better—I think that’s because they’d seen the Dragon movie and could follow the story easily.

If you’re thinking about going, get on it, as the shows are selling out fast. They just added more seats yesterday, but who knows how long they’ll last. Have fun!

Are you going? Yahoo Travel named it the #2 holiday lights event in the country (just behind NYC), and The New York Times has deemed the Newport Beach Boat Parade “one of the top holiday happenings in the nation.”  The Christmas Boat Parade, is on Dec 19-23 and celebrates its 104th year in Newport Beach. This year’s theme is “Surf, Sand & Santa.” Residents and businesses of Newport Beach will gather to decorate nearly 100 boats in lights and holiday decor—ranging from kayaks to yachts.

The Christmas Boat Parade winds its way around 14 miles of the Newport Harbor. The beautiful sight can be viewed from restaurants, yacht clubs, public beaches, and in private homes. Where’s the best spot, and what you should know before you go, below. Take a read on these Insider Tips.

Newport Beach Boat Parade Insider Tips:
-Be sure to allow an extra hour to find parking around the Peninsula and surrounding areas like Lido Isle, Bayshores, and Balboa Island.

-Pack a picnic. Great pre-made options can be found at A Market and Promelis. A cheese platter and wine goes great when watching the Boat Parade with friends and family.

-All the parks around Lido Isle offer grassy spots and beach for you to watch the Parade. Parks are located along Via Lido Nord and Via Antibes, Via Genoa, Via Orvielo, Via San Remo, and Via Waziers. Parks are also located along Via Lido Soud and Via Koron, Via Orvielo, Via San Remo, and Via Waziers.

-If you are coming by boat, the beach on Channel Road at Peninsula Point is the perfect spot - you can dock your boat and head out to the beach.

-Another great spot is the Jetty View Park down by the Wedge at Channel Road and East Ocean Front. There is plenty of grass for seating options.

-If you are in Corona del Mar, Sea View Park on Ocean Blvd overlooks the Newport Channel and provides a great angle to view the Boat Parade in CDM.

-A favorite of locals is Balboa Island - there really isn’t a bad spot to watch from the Big and Little Islands. Our favorite is the corner of South Bay Front and Jade Ave on the Little Island.

-Be sure to get to your secret spot early, bring blankets, snacks, and sweaters - and enjoy.

No plans for NYE yet? Knott’s Berry Farm promises something for the whole family this New Year’s Eve with a mix of dance music, magician fun, plus Knott’s rides, attractions and a Midnight Mayhem Fireworks Show in Calico Square. We’ve never been before for New Year’s, so we’re planning to go this year, as we’ve had so much fun during the holidays, as I shared on OC Family.

Knott’s plans to roll out two dance parties in the park. The evening will include salsa instruction in Knott’s Fiesta Plaza and line dancing in Knott’s Wilderness Dance Hall, as well as a live performance by the popular band Clueless Remix Featuring DJ Resso in Calico Square.

The whole family can also enjoy a special performance of Snoopy on Ice and family-friendly comedian magician, Dana Daniels, as he combines magic and improv. In addition, Camp Snoopy will be open with rides and shows for the young and the young at heart including “Happy New Year Charlie Brown!” at the Camp Snoopy Theatre where Charlie Brown and the rest of the Peanuts gang will ring in the New Year with song, dance and some fun audience participation.

You can also opt for an overnight stay. Is Disneyland on your list for the holidays? It’s better than ever with the addition of Cars Land in the mix. We checked out the park during Family Media Day, and the kids were buzzing around the Resort like three little elves on a mission to see and do all in a day.

Between Disneyland and California Adventure, you can definitely spend a whole day trying to squeeze in all the attractions. Highlights include: the new holiday décor for Cars Land and Buena Vista Street in Disney California Adventure, the “Believe … in Holiday Magic” fireworks show, the “A Christmas Fantasy” Parade and the snowfall on Main Street, U.S.A., “it’s a small world” Mall and New Orleans Square.There’s also Sleeping Beauty’s Winter Castle; after dark, there’s a special holiday lighting and special-effects show.You can also enjoy a new ice rink for the holidays at Downtown Disney.

First on our list was Cars Land, as we hadn’t checked it out yet. What fun! The Radiator Springs Racers ride was well done by Disney imagineers. We laughed wildly as we raced the car next to us, taunting them about how they’re ‘going down.” The ride was as beautiful and scenic, as it was fast and creative.

It really is a magical time to ring in the holidays at Disneyland Resort.

Now will your children be cast under the spell of all things nice and little of the naughty? You can hope! Such a classic moment at the park (below), as Ty incessantly told Zoe to stop hugging him. Ah, the warm and fuzzy of the holidays.

The train ride was great, effortless fun, and the kids were thrilled by the unique experience. (My train tip: Metrolink does almost “rolling stops, so hop on fast so you don’t miss your train.) We took a train from San Juan Capistrano to Oceanside, then a resort shuttle picked us up at the train station and kindly took us to the hotel.)

The Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa is really lovely if you’ve never been. You’re welcomed by a grand lobby, there’s fabulous dining at the Twenty/20 Grill & Wine bar (brunch is delicious!), and the pool scene is beautiful and has an ideal grill/cocktail setup right off the pool deck (night dive-in movies too). Shortly after arriving, Zoe and I hit the Ocean Pearl Spa for a Mother/Daughter pedi service, which was the cutest thing and very, very relaxing. Nadine in the Spa was so wonderful; she used the Fluffy Bunny shea butter line and Honey Heel Glaze with cinnamon that was out-of-control blissful. Zoe feel like a princess, I was in heaven and the Spa was a real treat for fab girl time. Read the full story on OC Family.

For a great Girl’s Night Out, I picked a favorite top five for CBS Los Angeles. If you’re still wondering what it’s like to do SUP, get on it and get a paddle in the water. It’s so much easier than you think (in the harbor, not the ocean). And if you have done SUP, but maybe not at sunset, you’re missing out and you must try it. Pirate Coast PC is a great group of guys and gals that offer SUP at The Dunes in Newport Beach. Their new location there is chill, beautiful and makes it so easy to get on and off a board.

They always have great events going on, but a real gem is their Sunset Paddle when the scene just seems more dreamy, peaceful, and the water sparkles just right. We took the kids on a recent Sunset Paddle and it was charming. Tim and Mark were so cool with my kids, who are just 7 and 8 years old; letting them hop on a board of their own while the adults and much older teens took to the water.

I admit, I was a little nervous, particularly for my son, but the Pirate guys said, “Let’s see if he gets it, let’s give him a little time.” One of the owners hung back with my husband and son to teach him the ropes a bit (before possibly booted to sit on the front of Dad’s boards). And sure enough, my Ty got it. “It” was of course the hang of it, but “it” was also about an ocean-size dose of confidence. It was awesome to seem him up on his SUP board “leading” all the other paddlers back to shore, as seen here.

The Sunset Paddle really is magical. And it’s paired with a gathering Wednesday nights at Back Bay Bistro afterwards; it’s officially dubbed a Wild Wednesday Happy Hour, but kids can go inside the restaurant and have dinner or grab appetizers. My kids had Shirley Temples and pasta and I had a Veggie Burger and Corona. The restaurant is very quiet at night midweek so things are pretty low key for kids and it’s a relaxing way to end a summer night.

Think Project Runway for kids, but without the “you’re either in or out” finale, and no one has to pack up their scissors. Fashion Camp OC is brilliant for young girls with big design dreams. My girl, Zoe, is there now and I’m truly quite impressed with what I’ve seen.

Zoe is midweek at the camp, which is held at SOCO (South Coast Collection), and so far she’s designed an inspiration board, sketched outfits, made a bag, belt and bracelet, tissued out a dress and done a photo shoot.

There are two days of camp left and then a final fashion show on Friday (I’ll tell you all about it on OC Family soon, so stay fashion-tuned). The camp is the real deal, which I love. I was a bit worried about my young gal hanging out at the progressive SOCO without me, but it’s completely fine. And I actually adore the fact that she’s amongst current, on-trend designers and boutiques. (If you still haven’t been to SOCO by the way, get there -my SOCO story for Bask Magazine).

Below is one of my favorite shots from the week so far, seeing Zoe in her element with a flash of her potential fashion future.

Erin Bianchi created the camp, as there was nothing like it for young fashionistas in Orange County. To Erin’s credit, she’s stuck to her design-guns and kept it about fashion. “Parents ask me if we can make pillows, and I nicely say no, this is about fashion—we’re not crafty, we’re about style.” Kudos (from me, the least crafty gal in OC probably). It’s fabulous when kids get real-world hands-on experience. Erin told me when she grew up the closest thing to what she has created was modeling school, which she talked her mom into doing to get into fashion any way she could.

Erin’s original intentions for the camp were holiday breaks and summer, but the concept has blown up with such demand that she now offers all kinds of ongoing “camps”—classes, really—for gals to get schooled at SOCO’s Fashion Camp OC. Erin speaking to a group, below.

Summer is on at Seasons 52, the highly-acclaimed fresh grill and wine bar restaurant at South Coast Plaza. They’ve just introduced their new summer menu. I previewed it, and I can tell you as a Vegetarian, it’s quite delightful.

One of the main dishes on the menu was created just for Vegetarians. Chef Tim told me that it was one of the dishes he put the most time into. “A lot of love went into it,” he shared, explaining how it isn’t just another main meal minus the chicken or beef. I personally love that, as it’s rare that you hear someone has made a special dish for the herbivores out there.

The new Veggie dish is called the Summer Vegetarian Tasting “grains of life,” with a soft taco, chili relleno, vegetables, cedar-roasted tofu and mango chutney. Like everything on the menu, it’s just 475 calories and was light, yet very filling. It’s worth foodie-noting that the non-Veggies in the crowd seemed to find it quite delicious as well.

There really was so much to enjoy on the new menu from the Watermelon Refresher Cocktail to the Organic Tomatoes with Warm Crusted Mozzarella, below.

As mentioned, the star dish was this Summer Vegetarian Tasting.

And the Mini Indulgences, including the Berry Cheesecake with fresh blueberries, raspberry sauce and graham cracker crumbs, made for a divine end of the meal.

Visit Seasons 52 this summer at South Coast Plaza before the summer cuisine changes over to fall. The restaurant changes its menu four times a year with weekly fresh features to truly capture the flavors of the season. And, as stated, but worth repeating, nothing on the menu is more than 475 calories, from the signature flatbreads and appetizers, to all entrees and the popular Mini Indulgence desserts.

If surf’s your scene and you’re open this weekend Saturday May 26-28, check out the 11th Annual Spring Fever Surfabout in Laguna Beach. Big fun, epic prizes. Bring the groms and have a good time. All will gather at the top of the Thalia St. The event is put on by Laguna Surf and Sport, specifically Jason “Watto” Watson and Steven “SLi Dawg” Chew. I’ve had a chance to get to know them both and dig their passion for the waves, for Laguna and showing young groms how it’s done. This contest is tradition in the Laguna community. The consistency of the winter swells at “Thalia Reef” makes it one of the most worthy spots in town. See you there? I plan to bring my boogie-board kid who has his eye on the waves and heart begging for a real board.

The temps are up, the search for swimwear is on, and Macy’s has hot looks just in. I previewed the Macy’s 2012 Swim Fashion Collection and among my top picks are this chic Kenneth Cole Reaction Cover Up. I love the printed tunic style, the bright colors and boatneck design. And I have to say, it’s scored me many compliments poolside lately (which is a beautiful thing when you’ve just had a baby).

I wore the cover up last weekend at the Montage in Laguna Beach, and I loved the fabric’s lightweight ways. What’s nice is that you don’t have to worry about it matching your suit because it covers you to mid-thigh. Another style plus is the easy, breezy fabric no matter how hot the temps go.

Macy’s has many stylish swim styles in their new collection, such as the looks below. Get out there, have a great summer, and beautify your body (whatever size or shape). And remember, it’s not just what you wear, it’s how you wear it. So walk the walk when you hit the beach or pool.

Want the younger you back? Who doesn’t? Through May 31, Burke Williams is inviting you to “spring into regeneration” with their new signature Anti-Aging Facial. I visited last weekend for the treatment, and can tell you that you will love it (all of it: the facial, foot rub, hand soak, back massage and all). While the spa has always carried anti-aging products that they incorporate into their facials, this new treatment is fully focused on anti-aging. The special pricing is $169 (regularly $195+).

The treatment is quite innovative, using a blend of plant stem cells (who knew?) and illuminating concentrate. Specifically, I’m told it’s a combination of H2V R3 Transform and Matrixyl Peptides that lifts, firms, brightens and evens the skins tone while repairing damage (and yes, we’ve all damaged our faces with the sun, toxins and fretting over to botox or not).

The relaxing 75-minute facial was quite interesting, combining what seemed 5-10 different steps from cleansing, a peel, airbrushed stem cells, special moisturizing layers, extractions and more. Who knows exactly the steps when you’re laying there eyes closed, and you won’t exactly care, as long as the spa-ahh continues, right?

In addition to turning back time on your face, they treat your hands, chest and give you a wonderful rub-away-your-worries shoulder and back massage, as well as a foot massage.

As you can probably tell, it really was a head-to-toe rejuventing, relaxing time. Now do I look 25 again? It’s not a fountain of youth, but re-setting your skin and kickstarting healthy skin is so important periodically. It’s also a great opportunity to put yourself first and your best face forward again.

Bubble Extravaganza returns to Discovery Science Center (DSC) now through April 22. I checked it out with my kids Media Night, and it was indeed a high-tech combo of art and science outside the Cube inside a tent. 

I can’t say I’ve ever seen such bubble spectacle with bubbles, lights, special effects and lasers. But who cares what I think, it’s all about the kids. Suffice to say, there was a crowd of wide-eyed kids in bubble heaven at the magic. Deni Yang was great at wow’ing the group.

If you’d like to catch the show with your children, your window is short so get your tickets soon. Yang performs multiple bubble shows daily at Bubblefest. Your kids will also get a kick out of the outdoor play zone, water spheres, and interactive science zones. My girl got an insider’s look when Yang gave her a “Me in a Bubble” opp inside this giant bubble (below). “Everything was blurry,” she giggled. Many laughs, and ooh’s and ahhs are certain to be heard at the very at of the show also when the show lets the bubbles fly all over the crowd. It’s a pretty bubblicious good time.

I’ve been hearing about this event for years, and finally plan to make it. I’m personally not running (pulling the new-baby card), but I signed my husband and kids up. Sounds like a killer photo op.

The Run always sounds so fun every year and it fills up my Twitter feed often, so I’m excited to check out the race in person. And it sounds so cute with the kids “Mud Puddle” race.

You may not think the luxe Surf and Sand in Laguna Beach is a family getaway, but you’d be surprised. My story on the resort on CBSLA.com; here’s a splash of the story… Its name says it all. The Surf and Sand Resort in Laguna Beach is surf-surreal close with the sand at hand, literally just steps away. The hotel is pure SoCal without the over-the-top need to impress. It is quite luxe, but in a boutique beach/chic way. There’s no dress code, it’s very comfortable and it seems anything goes.

The original hotel was born in 1948—starting with just 13 rooms. Since then, Surf and Sand has been renovated many times and added 2 additional buildings (for a total of 167 rooms now), but luckily the bones of a former beach motel are still evident at the Four Diamond rated resort. You’ll see its carefree ‘50s style in details such as its simplistic lobby and hallways that are exposed to the outside.

My CBSLA.com coverage of MJ as the spectacle OC and heads to the Staples Center. ... If you’re Cirque du Soleil and going to pay tribute to Michael Jackson, you’re going to do it in a big, Bad way. The show visits Los Angeles this weekend.

Blame it on the boogie, chalk it up to Jackson dying too soon, or Cirque du Soleil’s wild interpretation of all things — whatever the case, THE IMMORTAL World Tour all came together Tuesday night at the Honda Center as the entertainment spectacle hit Orange County.

The almost sold-out show got a standing ovation from the 9,000 people in attendance. One look around and you could almost see fans’ mental flashbacks of their Michael memories: roller skating to “Billie Jean” with the disco ball spinning, dancing at a concert, practicing the moonwalk and so on. That nostalgia and missing of MJ made the show what it was: almost therapeutic perhaps, as showgoers celebrated the only way they knew how.

I set out to find the latest gear for little ones in this month’s cover story for OC Family. Here’s a taste and link to the full story…

What’s a new parent to do? The baby marketplace is filled with an overload of “now” and “next” and “latest and greatest.” It can be overwhelming when trying to sort through it all. I know this all too well, as I’m the exact demographic that all these new products are targeting. A mom (again) and six years out of the new-baby scene (we have two other children), I was on the hunt for the smartest, most stylish and most ingenious baby must-haves.

So, if you have a baby due soon, here’s my list: everything from a 360-degree orbital stroller with engraved skateboards to a space-age-looking swing/bouncer hybrid to the latest green line of lotions for babe and mum. Enjoy the gadgetry and sophisticated products of all things baby for the lucky newbie parents and newborns of 2012.

What would the holidays be without The Nutcracker by Festival Ballet Theatre? FBT’s beautiful ballet is an annual tradition for so many Orange County families. I catch up with three of the main stars: the Clara’s cast in the show.

FBT once again hosts an array of talent and some of ABT’s best guest artists. You’ll find the sets are magical and costumes are charming . The Nutcracker show run December 10-24, so you have various opportunities to see it before the curtain drops on the final show Christmas Eve. You can choose from night or afternoon shows, pick up one of many gorgeous nutcrackers in the lobby pre- and post-show and just create very special memories for your family.

I’m such a fan of FBT because of their dedication to the craft and the passion from the Director, Salwa Rizkalla. For more than 20 years, she has given students amazing opportunities and entertained OC with top-notch performances. Salwa also runs Southland Ballet Academy, where students get their start and learn all kinds of dance.

So ring in the holidays with The Nutcracker once again for 2011. Tickets are $4o for adults and $35 for children. Click for performance times, and enjoy some charming OC and FBT tradition.

The Montage in Laguna Beach is always beautiful whatever time of the year. But during the holidays, it’s especially lovely–from the dining and decor to the warm, cozy, comfortable ambiance of the resort. We visited for Thanksgiving and it was delightful. With us just having a new baby, it was so wonderful to skip the cooking and just enjoy the day with our new family of five. (I’m sure many moms can relate new baby or not.)

We dined in the Masterpiece Grand Ballroom for a buffet that was abundantly delicious for all of us (half of our family is Vegetarian). Executive Chef Rob Wilson (below) kindly walked us through the offerings and made a point to call out the Children’s Buffet area, which was so thoughtful at a child’s height with quaint PB& J sandwiches, macaroni and cheese and much more. The kids adored all their choices and fancy sparkling cider. It’s adorable when resorts go out of their way to make the younger ones feel special.

The Montage offered family portraits upon arrival and had picture-perfect holiday decorations throughout the buffet. The space was inviting, open, airy and truly had all one could wish and want for.

The vast menu started with Butternut Squash Bisque for a soup selection, an endless, vibrant Salad Station (I enjoyed the Baby Spinach with Warm Pancetta Cider Vinaigrette with seasonal berries and Heirloom Tomatoes), and the Artisan Cheese and Wine area was divine with rare and exotic farm cheeses, nuts and red and white pairings. Other stations included the Sushi Roll Selection, Smoked Salmon Display, an On Ice variety of shrimp, crab and more and, of course, a Carving station with organic turkey and prime rib. Accompaniments included all from leeks and apricot stuffing to crisp, fresh green beans. And a bread display satisfied every carb craving you could have. Finally, everyone’s favorite, the Dessert Bar was irresistible; I’m embarrassed to say how often my husband and the kids revisited the artistic sweet selections that overflowed from red velvet varieties and warm pumpkin crepes to apple cinnamon crisp and on and on and on.

The Montage will be putting on an equally exquisite buffet for Christmas with a unique menu in the Master Ballroom, or you may dine at The Loft or The Studio on the resort property. Those dining included many locals, so if you go, know you’ll be among friends as always at The Montage. The resort is very local-friendly and it’s a wonderful place close by to escape to with a laid-back essence that’s welcoming and friendly. We spent time in the hotel playing checkers by the fireplace after our buffet and thoroughly enjoyed the moments to relax and spend quality time with our family.

Kudos to Chef Wilson and the Director of Banquets Javad Mirtavoosi on an elegantly exquisite holiday. And here’s to the other holidays ahead from New Year’s to Easter and the ever-popular Mother’s Day dining.

After 8 long, stressful days in NICU since our baby arrived early, we needed a big dose of some Disney magic–some lighthearted fantasy, the escape of a holiday wonderland. So our first outing with our new baby was Disneyland! Some probably thought I was crazy to be out and about so fast, but it was just the fix our family needed.

You see our new boy was born on my daughter’s birthday and “It’s okay, Mom” was all I heard for that week, as her party got cancelled, she slept in hospitals, she ate her grocery cake next to my Mission Hospital bedside and, well you get the picture. She was a trooper through it all, but I saw the deep, disappointment of her invisible 8th birthday that I just couldn’t seem to fix. Not many things can make up for a year of anticipated hopes and little girl dreams.

Luckily, Disneyland just so happened to be hosting a holiday blogger preview event. So we gathered ourselves, and ungracefully stumbled out the door as our new family of five.

My girl beamed, giddy with the promise of the special escape. “Mommy, the castle was so beautiful!” “The reindeer were the best.” “The rides were so much fun.” And she beamed as we hit the holiday party later that night. It was so fantastic to see her having fun, getting lost in the moment and finally getting her special day.

Indeed we all had fun, forgetting the stress of our very long week and becoming normal again … socializing, laughing, walking amongst the magical decor. Sometimes nothing other than Disneyland can fix the big things. Let’s face it, it’s tough times economically, the holidays can bring stress and sadness, and many other factors get magnified. So if you need a holiday boost, Disneyland can really work its magic. It did for us. We are so blessed to have our happy, healthy bundle of joy. And when it comes to memories, I’m sure my girl will always remember her belated 8th birthday celebrated at Disneyland.

So if you can relate (whatever your circumstance), pick you fantasy day to get away and get lost in all the holiday spirit. There’s much to see and do in 2011, from the new toon-themed cartoon-style Christmas tree this season for the 2011 holidays at Disneyland Resort. I’ve never seen the show, but heard nothing but fantastic things about the rockin’, creative “Blue Men.” If you always wanted to catch them, or see them again, then lucky you–as they are on their North American Tour and performing right here in OC at the Segerstrom Center for the Performing Arts Nov. 8-20th. I love not having to jet off to Vegas, New York or elsewhere to see this show!

USA Today called them a “high-octane theatrical experience, a must see.” And The New York Times said, “The show rocks!” Here’s a look at some of the high-octane you can expect at the show.

The shows combine comedy, music and multimedia theatrics. And more than 17 million people around the world have experienced the party atmosphere of a Blue Man Group live event.

I say take the whole family; I bet the kids will be blown away and mesmerized, and it’s a show they’ll always remember. It’s also a great musical firestarter for imaginations. You could also make it a date night; I know my husband has been talking about seeing this show forEVER.

Pregnant and due any week now, I’m considering having pregnancy photos taken. Did you have any taken/still love yours? I never had any shot with my other kids as I always prematurely delivered. And, honestly, I was always a bit uneasy about the somewhat contrived shots and strange attire (you know what I mean?). Add to all that, the cankles, double chin and all-over puffy factor and I just never felt glam enough to give it a go.

Perhaps I have missed out though, as I see some of the shots here from Heather and am jealous of these lifetime images/memories these women have and may never get the chance to have again. And the organic (and also stylized) nature of the photos pretty much blows me away. If you feel the same and are considering some shots, you may want to check out Heather of A La Mode photo. Heather, who also offers children, family and wedding photography, offers both film and digital as well as a wide range of photo products. And uniquely, part of the experience she provides for clients is in designing one-of-a kind wardrobes for my pregnancy sessions (I love this angle.).  ”My pregnant clients are always so excited to come to their photo shoot because I tailor the wardrobe for each individual as if I am fashion designer and magician all in one,” she adds. That’s pretty awesome.

Heather shared some Top Pregnancy Photo Tips to also keep in mind if a session is in your future:

Whether indoors or outdoors, pick a natural, tranquil scene as your background. Heather’s personal favorite backdrop is the beach.

Try to find a place with very few people.  Be careful of trash cans and other items in the background that might detract focus from you.

Wear something that shows off your pregnant belly and will look good in both color and black and white photos.

Heather likes to wrap her pregnant subjects in material to accentuate the belly while the excess fabric flows romantically in the wind. Visit your local fabric store and pick up 6 yards of chiffon material.

Change up your poses. Don’t be afraid to experiment.

Pictures where the mom-to-be is looking down at and holding her stomach always look beautiful.

Relax. Ask a friend or loved one to shoot you. Knowing that someone who already sees you as beautiful is taking the pictures is enough to put your mind at ease. And have fun.

Enjoy the moment. Heather understands that when looking down at your pregnant self, you feel very wide.  Just remember how stunning you’ll feel looking back at those pictures.

What’s on the Fall radar in OC? My family and I hit The Ritz Carlton recently to check out their Ambassadors of the Environment program and it’s a great time right now to experience all that’s going on there. I was very impressed, and they have some Halloween happenings you might be interested in. That and more on the current episode of OC Family TV airing this month on COX3.

To get the eco skinny on the Ritz’s very smart green program, check out the OC Family TV segment below where I chat with the program’s director Lyn Evins. And click to the Ritz Carlton’s Laguna Niguel site for more details. Locals are welcome at the eco adventure excursions anytime, they have something happening daily and you don’t have to stay at the hotel (though of course do so if you get the chance, as it’s modern, luxurious and a blissful escape).

2011 marks our 4th year for this very fun, family October tradition of ours. My husband’s “The Pumpkin Man” and always tries to beat his last year record.

The kids adore watching the silly go down, my husband gets a kick out of it and I love the idea of instant, festive, eco decor and color splash for under $20.

Because I’m pregnant this year, I didn’t assist in loading so kind Kent from Laguna Niguel was our Pumpkin Assistant. We got 9 this year by the way. The pumpkins normally run about $8 each, so would have cost us $72. More valuable though are my kids’ memories of the day for life, which, yes, is priceless.

We’re fans of Armstrong year-round really, as I have a passion for plants and fountains. And I also like that Armstrong is a big community business, helping schools in the area and how they have a family-feel even though they are definitely a large-scale operation.

Happy Halloween decorating. How will you display your pumpkin score? We line our sidewalk every year and everyone knows us as The Pumpkin House (I hear the happy moniker when the kids come for trick or treat).

Shrek the Musical was silly, funny, charming, wild, vibrant and had the crowds cheering, laughing, hooting. My kids adored it; they wouldn’t even let us leave early on the Weds school night it was. And I saw many in the crowd who didn’t even have kids. Shrek the Musical, on now through Oct. 16th, at Segerstrom Center for the Arts is really a riot with goofy kid humor and many inside jokes parents will giggle out loud at.

Several of us from OC Family were invited to the show to sit in the Social Swamp and tweet away. You can check the Twitter hashtag: #shrekontour to see the live tweeting and reactions from our different families there. The tweet trail will give you a play-by-play kind of feel for the show. I never like to get too in-depth on reviews, as I hate to give too much away about performances, so I won’t go into the favorite acts or lines (there’s too much ogre magic to let out of the bag). But know that you and your kids will adore it and that the cast, sets and costumes were top-notch. And that oversized puppet dragon was very cool!

Festival Ballet Theatre, FBT, is one of Southern California’s most accomplished regional ballet companies, and next weekend they are putting on their first performance of the 2011/2012 new season. It’s good to know the backstory of Le Corsaire before you go, so you can easily follow along—so a quick downlow here: Le Corsaire is a tale of Medora, a young Greek girl sold as a slave to Pasha though loved by the pirate Conrad. When Conrad attempts to rescue her, he is captured and sentenced to death. To save Conrad’s life, Medora agrees to marry Pasha, but during the ceremony, the slave girl Gulnare takes Medora’s place. That evening Conrad enters to take Medora away, while Gulnare reveals the ring that proves she is Pasha’s lawful wife. Medora and Conrad escape, but their ship, caught in a storm, is wrecked. Luckily, the two survive, washing up together on a rocky island.

If you go, you’ll unboutedly find the quality, talent and guest artists behind FBT is really remarkable. And parents should know the company is paired with Southland Ballet Academy (in Irvine and Fountain Valley), which teaches students 3 to late teens in all fields of dance. My girl attends and I love the fact that the students are involved in top-notch performances (including the upcoming Nutcracker at The Barclay). I also hold dear how the students are exposed to real-stage happenings, as well as seeing their friends perform in professional fashion. Artistic Director Salwa Rizkalla’s is the driving, elegant force behind both the Company and Academy.

For the upcoming Le Corsaire performance, audiences will appreciate guest star and former American Ballet Theatre principal dancer Jose Manuel Carreño. And the program also includes Balanchine’s Valse Fantaisie and two new works by choreographers Kerry Nicholls and Andrea Schermoly.

This weekend was not only the 2011 Emmy’s, but the exclusive Pre Emmy Awards Celebrity Gifting Lounge, held at The Intercontinental Hotel Los Angeles in Beverly Hills. Style Guru Jayneoni Moore rolled out the red carpet for celebrity moms with her Pre Emmy Lounge Boom Boom Room.

The lounge hosted new must-haves for infant and toddler items, from the latest strollers to nursery furniture to items for toddlers and preschoolers.

Being 7 months pregnant, I was on the hunt for new fab and fun finds. Among my fave finds was “I’m The Daddy” Daddy Scrubs, seen below. What a fun idea for Dads to stand out, as so much attention is always given to baby and Mom. Fun, fresh, unique.

Petit Tresor had some amazing luxury cribs and nursery collections. They’re inspired by Hermes, Bottega Veneta, Manolo Blahnik, so you can imagine the end result. Located in LA, they are the source for sophisticated mothers with clients like Brad and Angie and Madonna. 

A big must-have item featured was the new LeapPad learning tablet by Leapfrog. It seemed impressive for kids 4-7, with a tricked-out iPad-like gizmo to get your kids learning while having fun. Think: built-in camera/video recorder, a library of 100+ cartridge games and activities and innovative creativity and reading apps.

Also Plum Organics, just featured on the Today Show and Ellen, seemed to have a great, healthy line of babe eats. I’ll definitely have them on my list in a few months when it’s baby dining time.

Finally, I thought Peekinz Baby was adorable for stylish, eco diaper checks. A bamboo back pocket opens to let you check diaper status is style.

So who won at the Emmy’s? I don’t know! I didn’t actually get to watch, but found several must-haves to be on the lookout for here.

The party is held 10 nights only at Disneyland park during Halloween Time 2011. (Party entrance requires a separate ticket for admission.) We’re hitting the party opening night, so I’ll report back. Past years visited though have proved a lot of fun for the kids and the park is seriously transformed. Also don’t worry that your kids won’t get enough loot; they’ll be buried. Here’s my look from last year, and full 2011 party 411 below.

Fashion Island is the place for Fashion’s Night Out this Thurs., September 8 from 5 to 9 p.m. The night kicks off with celeb stylists who share fall styling tips and Hollywood fashion secrets with OC’s stylish set. And during the evening, shoppers will enjoy fashion and beauty events, giveaways, sweet treats and live DJs throughout the center and more.  Make a purchase that evening at participating stores and you’ll walk with a Fashion Island tote, while supplies last. 

More than 25 stores will host events including Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom, American Rag Cie, Anthropologie, Elie Tahari, Inglot, lululemon athletica, Melvita, Michael Stars, Original Penguin, Stuart Moore, Trina Turk and Vince. 

My family and I were invited to check out Oceanside, and here’s a video look at all the happenings, from where to stay and play to a look at Legoland.

The Wyndham Oceanside Pier Resort had all the comforts of home, as it’s a timeshare also. So think 2-room, oceanfront, jacuzzi tub, kitchen, and laundry (click for my quick look around our suite). And the pool is not crowded and is very relaxing. Best of all, it’s steps from everything: the beach, restaurants, museums and more.

As far as what to do in Oceanside, as you saw in the video, we filled our few days with CA Surf Museum (you’ll see Bethany Hamilton’s shark-bite board, longboards vs shortboards, skate truck history and more), The Mission (beautiful grounds and good ole history for the kids) , Cafe 101 (an authentic ’50s diner with killer pineapple shakes), Ruby’s (classic pierside eats) and The Breakfast Club is a great all-’80s diner (think MJ, Duran Duran, and an owner who even offered to go get my husband allergy pills down the street). And Wheel Fun Rentals makes for an easy, breezy 4-passenger bike ride on the strand. Oceanside is just small-town, good vibes. You can do all of the above for a very affordable price too. The museum and mission are just a few bucks, and all the diners were well within reach.

And rounding out the vacation with a trip to Legoland was a great move. I loved how clean, bright and spacious the park was, and it was really nice to get rides, water fun and aquarium in one, so get the park hopper for sure. The kids loved Splash Battle best, so don’t miss the boat fun. Ideal age is probably 4-7 at the park, but you’ll see kids younger and older too. It was just so nice to switch scenery from the rides to Sea Life to the Water Park, and kept the kids’ attention front and center.

So if you’re looking for a chill weekend (as in no makeup, ok lip gloss, and casual attire) and just old-fashioned family fun, Oceanside is a strong contender. And it’s really not the military town many remember it is. It’s all surfer and very relaxed. Finally, consider taking the Amtrak train, just two blocks from the Wyndham (we needed a car, so couldn’t this time).

If you don’t have a pool in your backyard or nearby, or just want to getaway for the day, consider The Island Hotel. Formerly known as the Four Season’s, the luxe escape is located near Fashion Island. They are quite family-friendly there and invite the public to swing by any Sunday for some island time. We stopped by last Sunday this Summer for a relaxing day away of swim from 3-5 and BBQ poolside dining 5-7. Here’s a quick :60 look from dinner.

The chef was kind enough to prepare two delicious Vegetarian plates for my son and I. And both of my kids, of course, adored many trips to the dessert bar. Prices for the swim and BBQ day are: $34 per adult,  $12 per child and complimentary for children under 5.

Kids can also play some nearby ping pong and foosball by the pool. It’s a nice idea for a family get-together too, as the ambiance at the Island Hotel is quite nice and the location is quite central. If you’re interested, for reservations, call 949.760.4920.

The newest episode of OC Family TV on COX3 is live, and included is my Top 10 happenings around town. For August, we spotlight an eclectic array of must do’s, starting with Pageant of the Masters. Here’s a look at the segment online.

My kids loved the Pageant of the Master show, and if you’re thinking it’s too esoteric for kids, think again. This year’s show features many make-believe wonders that leave kids wide-eyed, from huge animated dragon statues that roar and come to life, to Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan and much more. And my kids had a blast with the binoculars. My favorite part involved one segment where they show you how all the living art comes together one step at a time with the talent, staging, props, lighting and voila! Tickets may also surprise you (many believe it’s not affordable), as they start at just $15.

Also the Festival of the Arts show (right next door) is buzzing beforehand, so head over; kids can even make pottery too.

Other events that made my list this month for the Top 10 Around Town television segment includes: The OC Look Party, D23 Expo, Fullerton Arboretum, Tommy Bahamas in Laguna Beach, OC Foodie Fest, Muzeo’s Chocolate The Exhibition, Yappy Hour at The Ritz Carlton and San Clemente Street Festival.

The full show airs Mondays at 6:30 and Saturdays at 5:30, so twice a week all month on COX3. The show is hosted by OC Family’s Suz Broughton; she’s always a riot and entertaining, so watch as she has some very fun segments this month.

Have you hit the OC Fair yet? If not, the countdown’s on. Every kid deserves the good ole memories of fair fun ... the rides, the food, the sights and exhibitions. There’s lots to do there again this year with free concerts at the Hangar, fried koolaid to stomach, the Ice Museum, the gadget expo and more. It’s old school family time together whether you’re a fair person or not. A few pics from our day out:

While we visited during the day, I’d actually recommend the Fair at night, particularly with the temps these days. And there’s a certain nostalgia of a Fair at night. The lights and sights carry more quirky Fair personality. Go when you want, but go before Aug. 14th when the Fair wraps OC. Have fun.

It’s so the perfect time to cool off at Wild Rivers. Sometimes it’s easy to forget just how much fun the little people have on all those slides. Here’s a look at our day to refresh the fun for you. The kids were buzzing all around the park picking their favorite “rides,” letting the “ocean” take them in the wave pool and filling up water balloons with their mischevious dad. While I (pregnant) hit the Lazy River and chilled.

Few events come along where Moms and their girls can have such a perfect night out. Suz Broughton and I did just, as we planned a special Girl’s Night Out to see the show and dine at Jerry’s deli prior. We all got all dressed up for our night at the” the-at-er.”

While the show is, of course, great for all ages, it’s just a little more special with Moms and daughters. Here are Suz and I in front of the gorgeous Segerstrom Center for the Arts, and our girls dolled up below.

Dining at Jerry’s is a great way to start your night before the show. It’s a fun eatery with healthy-size servings and just a short walk to the Center. I’d recommend you leave your car there and just pay the valet the $5, then keep your car thee till after the show. The evening walk is divine among the night lights too.

Now … onto the show. It was more the overall experience for me than all the particulars of the performance. I know my girl will remember the show and night, but mostly the memories, which she may someday share with her girl. The show was big broadway all the way with very impressive and often vibrant sets, entertaining numbers with high energy and some eye-popping maneuvers such as Mary Poppins flying over the audience and a sassy vertical walk up and around the stage perimeter by Bert, the endearing chimney sweeper. My girl’s favorite part? The ridiculously talented Supercalifragilisticexpialidoc​ious musical number. How do they do that?

We clapped, laughed, smiled and cheered along with the crowd’s standing O at the end. Then the Broughton gals and my girl and I strolled back amongst the full moon and artsy architecture with a giggle in our step. It was a magical night. One which I’d highly recommend. And one which reminded me to try and put a little more Mary magic in my every day Mom approaches. Yes, I want to secretly be her.)

The kids are out of school and you don’t want to do the same ole, same ole. I hear ya and feel ya. Check out my latest Top 10 Around Town and get out there with some fresh ideas and outings.

For July, “Debbie’s Top 10 Around Town,” we start at the beach with Pirate Coast Paddle Company. They are a great trio of local guys out to bring families together with the latest sport of the summer. Just hit play and get the scoop to get your paddle on with Full Moon Paddles, Sunset paddles, camps or just your unaverage summer afternoon.

Below is my husband and little guy, when we tried out the sport with Tim of Pirate Coast. It was really a peaceful, fun, fresh time, and the kids couldn’t get enough.

No plans yet for the 4th? There’s still time to get tickets to Pacific Symphony Orchestra’s outdoor “July 4 Spectacular”. This year, it’s Elvis, thank you very much―on Monday, July 4, 8 p.m., at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine. A little “Jailhouse Rock,” “Hound Dog,” “Love Me Tender,” “That’s Alright.”

We’ve hit the symphony for the past few years on the 4th and it’s become our family tradition, and we love it. The kids get a kick out of picnic’ing pre-concert and snacking during the show, they get exposed to the arts while having fun outdoors, and we always know what we’re in for (no worrying about fighting for seats, outrageous crowds, etc). Of course, the fireworks are a blast as well, literally, with a large show at the end.

As far as seats go, you can’t go wrong. Lawn seats are fun and casual with a big blanket and playing around. Or you can opt for the tiered seats for added comfort and a closer view. I have no doubt the kids will like the Elvis rock-n-roll scene put to strings and brass, and I like the idea of introducing them to a legend.

About tickets, they are $25 (lawn) to $99 (orchestra); kids under 14 are half price in most sections with the purchase of an adult ticket. And if you’re a fan, you might want to consider the Five-concert Summer Festival packages. You can also opt for the Presto Picnic Package for the 4th that includes a reserved-seat ticket in the Terrace level for just $39 (regular price $55) and a Bristol Farms picnic meal selected that you pick up when you arrive through the gates (call 714.755.5799 for the picnic combo).

Happy 4th. And we’ll see you there if you go. We wouldn’t miss the tradition.

I had never heard of the seats and no one I knew had, so I had to check out these mystical D-BOX motion seats that I was hearing about at the Anaheim GardenWalk.

We went. We saw. We thought they rocked. UltraLuxe Cinemas at the GardenWalk is the only theater in Orange County with these D-BOX motion seats, which are programmed to move in sync with onscreen action. We saw Pirates 4, so when the boat swayed, you swayed. When something on screen jumped, your seat jumped. When rapid action took place, your seat rapidly moves to the motion.

The experience added a very cool, new dimension to moviegoing. It really, “put you in the story.”

Some things to know: there are only about 20 D-Box seats in the specific theater, the next closest location with D-Box is Mann’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, each seat has 4 levels (slow, medium, fast, off), the seats are more expensive than regular seats (about double the cost, I believe).

My kids loved the experience and my massive movie-going husband also gave it a thumbs up; he said “everything synced perfect.”

The UltraLuxe Cinemas at Anaheim GardenWalk has ended the Pirates D-Box showing and Super 8 is in D-Box now. If you don’t know much about Spielberg’s Super 8, it’s said to really be a kids’ movie (many think it’s only for adults), and reminded many of seeing ET as a kid.  By the way, we also caught Kung Fu Panda 2 at the UltraLuxe Cinemas. A nice bonus of going to the movies at the GardenWalk is the atmosphere : upscale restaurants from PF Chang to Roy’s to Cheesecake Factory, as well as specialty stores like Lush (which I love!).

•Summer Series- Every Tuesday and Wednesday from June 28 through August 31, kids are invited to enjoy 10 weeks of recently released, family-friendly films for the one-time ticket price of $5.00. A different film is featured each week, including favorite titles such as Yogi Bear, Shrek Forever After, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and How to Train Your Dragon.

The Stars of today meet the stars of tomorrow at this unique show from Festival Ballet Theater. And I have tickets to give away, just comment at my OC Family blog saying that you want to go this Friday at The Barclay.

The show opened Wednesday night at the Long Beach Convention Center. Here’s a look at the stage (below), or canvas if you will, where the story unfolded. Note the five multitracks overhead, which is where performers seemingly free floated above, often in long, draping cloth surreal-wear.

Quidam was surreal, and it’s good to know the backstory before you go; it will all make more sense with a sense of what’s ahead. Zoe is a young girl who’s bored with life as she knows it and her auto-pilot, distant parents (her mother and father, lost in their routine world, opened the show in the chairs on stage). So Zoe slips into this fantasy world of bright red balloons, imaginative wonder around her, a headless umbrella man, and more unusual characters.

The show was more poetic and artistic than some past fast-moving Cirque shows, such as Kooza, if you caught that. This performance has many beautiful moments, mystical music and a definite European flavor.

I’m always amazed at the ingenious creativity that must go into creating these spectacles, from the costumes and makeup to the dance moves and casting.

You’ll undoubtedly be entertained with comic relief by a clown/mime who pulls audience members on stage to create his minimovie. It’s classic Cirque style with the laugh-out-loud endearing mockery he makes of his pawns.

And as for the acrobatics, there were some extraordinary Cirque feats, from the sheer muscular abilities exhibited to the fast-moving man in a wheel.

Now you only have till Saturday to catch the show, so get a move if you’re considering it.

So, what fantasy-fantastic will the latest Cirque du Soleil show hold? I can hardly wait to find out. I’m constantly amazed at the shows’ feats and creativity and how different each is from one another. If you’re a fan and up for the latest, you only have 8 shows to choose from in a mere four days this Weds.-Sat in Long Beach at the Convention Center.

I’m hitting opening night Weds., so I will give you a show review Thursday, but this is pre-scoop now:

Quidam (which premiered in Montreal in 1996, has toured on five continents and been seen by millions) hits the states this year and features a Cirque international cast of 52 world-class acrobats, musicians, singers and characters. The story is one of young Zoé, who is bored and finds her life has lost all meaning. She slides into an imaginary world—the world of Quidam—where she meets characters who encourage her to free her soul.

Sounds like a Cirque land of magical, dreamy wonder awaits.

He’s all about green all month long. We caught up with Wyland to learn about how his blue planet is turning green for April.

Dolls! Dolls! Dolls! FBT presents this classic, sentimental comic ballet at The Barclay March 26th and 27th.

Sweet. Light-hearted. Mysterious. The story is one of inventor Doctor Coppélius, who makes a life-size dancing doll. The FBT production is choreographed by Salwa Rizkalla, after Arthur Saint-Léon.
Guest artists for Coppélia are Megan Fairchild and Andrew Veyette of New York City Ballet.

The performance is fully family-friendly, where kids can make their own ballerina dolls during fun pre-show activities. Sweet treats too and children can meet the FBT teachers too.

It’s wild to see what goes into Wicked The Musical. Here’s my look for Orange Coast Magazine, as Wicked casts its spell at Segerstrom Center for the Arts through April 3, 2011.

There was so much activity buzzing backstage with just a few days to pull the whole show together. The detail, crews and logistics to pull off such a big Broadway show is not to be underestimated.

So how did the load in add up from the other side of the curtain? I caught Thursday’s Press Night performance and can report all was pulled together flawlessly.

Wicked was all it promised to be. Big. A spectacle. Rich with vivid, surreal sets. And of course creative talent that flowed and danced its way from start to finish.

For those who may not know, Wicked is the prequel to all that happened before Dorothy dropped in. So you learn how Glenda the Good Witch (played by the perfectly perky Natalie Daradich) and the Wicked Witch of the West (aka Elphaba, Anne Brummel) came to be. The story is quirky, sassy, funny and touchingly sweet. And the Emerald City of Oz is wickedly over the top and psychedelically a little trippy.

Both witches have attitude and contrast each other in an endearing manner, while the orchestral scores sync beautifully to script.

It’s no wonder the show continues to sell out around the world. And OC is no exception. While the 40 shows through April 3rd are all but completely full, you can take your luck at the lottery, as I said in the video. Arrive at the box office 2.5 hours before each performance and within a half hour, you should hear if you’ve scored orchestra seats for a ridiculously reasonable $25. Wicked good luck to you.

Rarely do you really find a restaurant where everybody wins. Z’Tejas Southwestern Grill at South Coast Plaza is a fresh mix of spice, affordability, availability of Vegetarian dishes, kid’s healthy, refreshing cocktail concoctions and more. 

The place has been open awhile now, but many OC’ers are still new to the offerings. You’ll find culinary influences there from Louisiana, Texas, California and Mexico. And the ambiance is upscale with an exhibition kitchen, private dining room, mahogany bar, wrought iron detailing, copper accents and also al fresco dining.

I was invited to check out the latest Z’ and get the dish on what’s going down. While there, I ordered up the Mango Pepper Chile Salad and adored the pairing of such healthy with attitude (and was won over by a full Vegetarian side of the menu). The kids also came in tow to try what’s more in store for in ‘11, such as the new Z’Kids menu for all under $6. Think mini-adult food; all from healthy chopped salads to gourmet Vegetable Quesadillas, as well as some familiar mac and cheese and more.

Happy hour prices will please any casual meetup, and if you do dine with the children, be sure to go on a Sunday when they eat free. That’s right. Check it: you can enjoy adult atmosphere and pair with on-the-house meals for your little foodies.

Z’Tejas is right on the money in more ways than one. So spice up your outings, and maybe give this Southwestern eatery a go.

She’s your OC girl if you’ve got a big girl’s night out, photo shoot, tv gig or need any kind of makeup makeover. Who wouldn’t love it? A 2-hour sunset cruise in Newport Harbor is so relaxing and fun with friends. Duffy Boats invited us to get our sea legs ons and they are sharing the love with you too (keep reading). We went to celebrate a birthday, or you could opt for an anniversary, a party with friends, relatives in town—it’s all good. The boats seat 10-12. We really had a great time and the kids had a total crush on taking the captain’s chair and driving the Duffy. Here’s a look at our day out:

He’s a rising star in the Pacific Symphony Orchestra and a rockstar in Bulgaria. He rocks helicopters, planes and rides motorcycles—and he conducts Family Musical Mornings for the PSO at Segerstrom Hall. I caught up with Maxim Eshkenazy after the latest show. Here is our chat, and by the way, there are still two more shows in the series in March and May. But first, take a look and meet Maxim, who played my Facebook “Free For All” game. He’s a good sport.

Now I’m not exactly the Monster Jam demo, but my kids are. What pushed me over the edge was this fun pre-show look by my friend Suzanne Broughton. This video reminded me of how big and wild the day would be from a kid’s POV. My husband was really into the idea too, so much so that he wanted to make it part of his birthday day.

Have you heard of the show? Here’s a look at Cavalia from Opening Night/Media Night in LA, as well as my interviews with some of the cast riders and acrobats for Bask Magazine.

Now my look here is just a glimpse at the mystique. Cavalia, A Magical Encounter Between Horse and Human, is quite a complex show.

So is it indeed ‘Cirque with horses’ as many have dubbed it? Yes, the show was created by one of Cirque du Soleil’s Canadian founders, but it is different than other Cirques shows in several ways. With the element of animals under the Big Top, it’s more unpredictable, less perfected and more organic—all in an inspired, fluid, very natural way. To see the beauty of the unsaddled horses enter freely into the area is gorgeous. To know the unpredictable nature of horses is captivating.  And to see these powerful beasts perform with gentle human commands was quite inspiring. The mulitimedia backdrop that evolved throughout the show was also a very creative touch.

What was similar to other Cirque shows was the vast range of acts, from slow-moving and provoking to quick Western riding. Expect all from The Discovery to Bareback Riding to Trick Riding and Bungees Cavaliers, and each is executed with very artsy style. The live music was enchanting as well. The acrobats? Charismatically engaging as always, and uniquely brave to do such feats with horses.

So while similar and contrasting its sister Cirque shows in execution, the show overall dominated with its connection between human and horse. You knew these powerful beauties were deeply cared for, respected and honored in a poetic relationship rarely seen.

37 artists (acrobats, dancers, riders) from Canada, France, Morocco, Russia and more star in the show. And 49 horses, with 11 breeds from Arabian to Mustangs bring their best.

Over 2.5 million have seen the show around the world, and it’s on through February 14th, so you too have time. Prices are pricey, about $69-139 per ticket, but to see it is a gift.

On assignment with Bask Magazine, I caught up with the curator of this all-California exhibit of artists on the verge. The show is a slice of CA culture and trends of 40 emerging artists. It’s on through March, read the full interview here at Bask.

I think this is one of the more beautiful pieces I’ve shot. And I’ve learned performance night is nothing like rehearsals (if you saw my behind the scenes last week). Everyone knows where they are supposed to be, and is preparing quietly/in the zone. Here is a look at one of the weekend’s first shows, backstage and on stage). I interviewed the Artistic Director (one hour before the curtains parted) with the #1 U.S. performers warming up behind her.

The caliber of talent in the show is top-notch. The best guest artists in the country, including Gillian Murphy & Gennadi Saveliev, Irina Dvorovenko & Jose Manuel Carreno (who has quite a following), and Ashley Ellis & George Birkadze.

I asked Festival Ballet Theatre Salwa Rizkalla how she secures such talent. She humbly attributed it to her 25 years in the ballet, her deep relationships with the dancers and the draw of Orange County, particularly in Winter.

Whatever her magic, she should keep doing it. Bravo!

Here’s my quick look at what you’ll see from the night at The Rockettes Christmas Spectacular show It’s only in town through the 12th, and kids’ tickets are half off!

Now the show tours the country, so perhaps you’l have a chance in another city should you miss this weekend. And by all means, put it on your bucket list for next season. It really is that good. I’d never seen them, and was thrilled to and to share the memories with my kids. I’d love to make it an annual tradition.

The variety of numbers was rich and wide. And the precision of all the times movements really blew my mind. (And their legs really motivated me to get back to the gym.)

I almost got trampled shooting this. Dancers, Mice, Angels, Soldiers, Stagehands, and more were buzzing about for this first all-decked out Barclay Dress Rehearsal (actual show runs Dec. 11-24). See this exclusive look and comment to win 4 tickets ($120 value).

The Barclay was a buzz with all the energy of 200 anxious dancers, ready to tip toe to the holiday classic. It was pure joy to watch it all unfold. The Sauza live parties have hit the East coast twice, but this is the West coast premiere!

What a great night with my #LadiesNightInLA friends and @chefmarcela. My fabulous co-hosts included: Elizabeth Peterson (@MintCool), Ana Flores (@laflowers), Sugar Jones (@sugarjones), and me (@DebLavdas). And it was all pulled together by the very multitalented Beth Feldman (@RoleMommy).

I am guilty of simply cracking open a bottle of wine or Blue Moons to get the party started lately. How about you? I’ll post Chef Marcela’s recipe here soon too.

I talked “The Talk” with the cast of CBS’ daytime talk show. We talked girlfriends, mom struggles, family and raising kids in OC and beyond. Click play for our candid chat, and don’t miss the end where Julie Chen talks mean tramps. Very funny.

The day with the cast and 14 fellow SoCal bloggers was a fun time of live taping and a private luncheon, but the last few minutes with them where I grabbed this exclusive chat left the biggest impression on me about the ladies, life and everyday learnings.

What stood out most was not the glitz and glamour or star power and celebrity of the time, it was the reality that we all, as women and moms, are really in this together. And no matter one’s rung on the social and success ladder of life, we all have our struggles, mistakes, insecurities—and joys.  Sharing these with our girlfriends and family—the good, the bad and the ugly—is what helps us grow and thrive.

This concept is the heart of the show. (And, FYI, while many have compared the show to The View, I found it more genuine with less focus on the sensational.)

I lunched next to Leah, who was a constant riot with her hilarious take on life. And I really loved Sharon’s honesty. At many points in her life, I imagine Sharon could have hid under a rock with her challenges and extra-spotlighted life, but she chose to push forward, have no regrets and share your story openly with others, reinforcing “no one’s problems are exclusive, someone else has been there too, so open up” and lean on one another.

That kind of talk ain’t cheap. It’s invaluable, don’t you think?

Some backstory on the new show, hosted by OC Family’s Suzanne Broughton, this is only the second episode (brand-spanking new) and airs Monday at 6:30 and Saturday at 5:30, and is produced by OC Family Magazine and Churm Media.

It’s big broadway in the OC. And for all ages–with and without kids. Here’s a quick :60 look at the scene and crowds (it was packed).

As usual, when Orange County Performing Arts Center puts on a show, it’s grand and gorgeous. The stage, sets and transformations were magical. The cast was quite witty and charming. And the scores were rich and theater-filling. All of which made for a lovely night out.

I took my little guy and he very much enjoyed it, as did I. I just adore when performances hit it with a variety of demographics.

So here’s the thing, you only have till Sunday to catch the show. So get booking your tickets if it’s possibly in your weekend plans. And psst, the center feels even more beautiful somehow with holiday in the air. Have fun!

My first Duck (Disney, that is) interview. And, like with kids, asking yes/no questions isn’t great. No Duck offense. Hit play to see what’s on at our West Coast’s winter wonderland.

So much fun! There really is so much to see at the resort. We were fortunate to do it in two days, as Disneyland hosted us and about 40 other West Coast families to a holiday preview at the resort and a very fun holiday party at the Grand Californian hotel.

I’m totally not a Tron junkie, but checked out the ElecTRONica scene at California Adventure, and the verdict is: you don’t have to be a sci-fi guy to enjoy the fun and funk. Here’s a look.

I really had no idea what to expect, and really got a kick out of the throwback/futuristic night. It’s a wild blend of ‘80s meets 21st century. Music blares from Men at Work and MJ to Journey and Rush, yet all eye candy around you is new-age funk/space-like party people.

If you go, and you should (it’s free), get there at 6pm and start the night with an exclusive sneak peek at Tron Legacy to get you in the mood; all Tron’ed up. The movie looks pretty good. After that, maybe grab the kids a hot cocoa or lemonade, and for yourself, get a Digitini or Glowjito at the open street bars. Then just walk around and take it all in.

There’s live dancers, DJs, the intense Laserman light show (only twice a night at 7:40 and 8pm), and the arcade is a riot! I got props from my girl when I smoked her on Centipede and put my initials up, like back in the day. She played some Donkey Kong, Tron and Asteroids too.

It really was fun, loose, and it surpassed Glowfest. I didn’t know if they could out-amp Glowfest, but they did.

Game over.

So Razor gave me the choice to give away any ride I wanted, and I went with the “Go big or go home” thought and went for the full-size E300 Electric Razor Scooter. And I’m so glad I did. You will be too, if you score it. Read on—but first see what’s the latest with them (quick :60 video chat during our recent Razor playdate):

So during our Razor day, the kids and adults got to test-drive all the latest rides and wheels. The electric go-karts (called ride ons) were a big score with the kids, as were all things drifter style (think cool-kid big wheels aka caster-driven rides). And the Sole Skate had some cool, very mobile factor to it, but the electric stand up caught my eye for several reasons. So we had ours delivered this week and played on it all weekend.

The E300 Electric Scooter is instantly fun, and awesome for all. It holds up to 220 lbs (vs. the E100 that holds 120 lbs). Now the E300 is recommended for 13 yrs. and up, but my 7 year old mastered it in five minutes. Me? Took about two minutes. What I completely dig about the E300 is “the all in” factor, or should I say “all out”? We are all outside riding together. They can hop on their classic-style razor, I hop on the E300 and we all head out. Family active hang time outdoors, and I’m not screaming at them from the top of the street to “Watch out for the car. Car!!” You know how it goes; I can be right there with them now. Now, I don’t hog it all the time, we switch, ride double and my husband definitely gets his Razor time in too.

I also like that we could Razor to school, and I could electric home. The E300 folds up too like the regular Razors, so you can throw it in your car, head to a park, beach etc and all be mobile without cumbersome bike racks.

It’s a total family hit. And the thing’s pretty fast, up to 15 mph. In these times of wanting a lot of bang for your buck, I think it really delivers as it’s got the mass appeal to it. So glad I was invited to this play date and got to know this company; their desire to get kids out there really impressed me, as did the evolution of scooter paths they’re on. Who knew?

Oh, the cost for this cool tech toy? About $260, and some quick E300 specs:

I’ve been carrying mine everywhere. Eco, fashion and function in one—finally. If you hate the plastic unfantastic, check this new HB biz for green drinks.

I’m confident I was dehydrated because I refused to bring a plastic water bottle with me for any reason. Not in the house. Not to a picnic. No way on a bike ride. Nada. Nothing. No way. No how. I hate the suckers. Truly.

So when I heard some Huntington Beach biz was serving up a fresh alternative, I was all in. (And note: I don’t just despise the bazillion plastic bottles for littering the planet, I mostly can’t come to terms with how they are not leaching chemicals into my drinking water when they are sitting in a delivery truck in the middle of the desert in 120 degrees in transit.)

The famous Russian folk tale ballet hits The Barclay in Irvine this weekend, October 16th & 17th. Here’s a sneak look at rehearsals. And, psst I have tickets to give away, keep reading. So hit play now to learn about the show.

The Firebird is a 1910 one-act ballet (about 45 minutes), and it is paired with several other contemporary pieces (a modern, upbeat, fun performance of Oops and as a rare treat performance, Laurencia). So the two hours of performance will be a great opportunity to see a wide array of dance.

Little more on backstory of the event at The Barclay? The Firebird production is choreographed by Nikolai Kabaniaev and features Jade Payette of Washington Ballet in the title role. The program also includes the two newly commissioned pieces choreographed by Molly Lynch and Viktor Plotnikov, and the Pas d’Action from Laurencia set by Yuri Fateyev, the Artistic Director of the Kirov.

It was a treat to see these Festival Ballet Theatre dancers in rehearsals. The FBT Company is one of Southern California’s most vibrant and accomplished regional ballet companies. They always bring it with a wealth of impressive talent, and, by the way, the company often features internationally acclaimed guest artists from American Ballet Theatre, Boston Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, the Kirov Ballet, New York City Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, San Francisco Ballet and Scottish Ballet.

The Firebird and the mixed repertoire tickets run $35 adult, $20 children. Performances are Saturday, October 16 at 7:30pm and Sunday, October 17 at 2pm. Get your tickets here or at TheBarclay.org.

I gotta say, I really loved how the park was transformed for the party; all the music was switched out, dry ice and fog were everywhere and killer decor set the mood. All of which gave Disney some fun edge.

By the way, three learnings from the party night:

1. Eat dinner before you go, and you’ll save some cash, of course.

2. Have kids wear an outfit that’s highly recognizable, as they love hearing “Hey Woody!” etc as they approach all in the park (The kids in the less obvious attire, may feel lost in the crowd.)

3. Don’t rush, there is plenty of candy and time for all throughout the party.

What a show! :60 sec. OC Live Look from me open to close. The 360 theater and circular seating made for an intimate night of wild, top-notch performances and engagement at the Peter Pan Media Night at the Orange County Performing Arts Center. Here’s my quick live look to get you in the mood.

Now what you didn’t see here was Tink. She’s got serious Brit attitude in this performance. And Peter Pan ain’t no sissy fairy. The show is a modern take on the classic tale with wit and edge that works for all ages.

So more on the 360 theater? Well it was like the Soarin’ ride if you’ve flown that lately. Tickles in my tummy during some of the scenes. The show brought a cool tech vibe to the show. And the puppetry (like the croc in the video clip) was way beyond what I’ve normally seen. Oh, and the music was epic really. Grand, rich, completely put you in the moment.

Hook? Well, he stole the show. The whole cast gets kudos but Hook was just so wicked good and yes, bad to the bone (the Jonathan Hyde clip courtesy of Suz Broughton by the way during her great sitdown with The Capt.).

It’s all you can carry at Armstrong Gardens—all for the price of one pumpkin. We’re die hard fans, as it makes for hilarity, as well as high-impact, low-cost decor to fabulously line your walkway (note: this is as crafty as I get).

Some 411 on tips and tricks below (or just watch the video and see us in action this year):

• Bring a partner to pile it on. (A great skill of mine, so I’m the always the Loader.)

• Skip the chic attire, this is a down and dirty job.

• Go for quantity, not quality (aka avoid the big, super-heavy orange guys).

• Get a cart. Get a worker to watch it go down.

• Start from the waist up, arms open wide. Line ‘em up stem down, so they create a table effect.

• Think pyramid shape. And start piling.

• After you pile ‘em high, stash ‘em wherever you can think.

Now, don’t sue me if you throw out your back, as these puppies are heavy.

Go, have fun and take your props as the “The Pumpkin House” when you come home and line ‘em up. The kids love the attention it brings to their homeshack, as well as telling stories of their SuperDad or Mom. And you can carve the orange friends up and light them a few days before the big night (if ya got the time, okay maybe skip that last part).

Life needs a little more levity, don’t you think?
