We hit the Laguna Playhouse press preview Friday to see how the cat and mouse would go from book and big screen to small stage. I didn’t quite know what to expect and wondered how the adaptation would play.
It was adorable. My kids cackled and were quickly drawn in as Stuart began his big adventures in the big city. A cast of 15 or so local, talented youth actors brought the story to life.
The sweet Stuart and wickedly naughty Snowbell the cat were perfectly cast. I fell for Stuart and couldn’t get enough of the cat’s theatrical moves and mischief. My kids were equally hooked and kept talking about the duo the next day.
What I love about children’s theater is the leap of imagination needed to follow along. TV and movies have the power to wow kids with smoke and mirrors and animated tricks, but theater requires the mind to play free with a simple, intimate, emotional connection.
Kudos to the young cast for their artful, heartfelt, funny adaptation of such a classic kids’ favorite. The play wraps the 15th, so get while the getting is good if you’re interested in going to this Laguna Playhouse production.

The above illustrations were on display at the Playhouse. They are scenes from the play and were drawn by kids at the Braille Institute of OC. Amazing art, and a story in itself.
