All For The Arts

An artistic dose of giving back and giving joy.

If you’re looking for your kids to give back and become more grateful, Discovery Arts is a bright light and a great way to go. The amazing nonprofit org brings music, art, dance and drama to children in the hospital with cancer, serious blood disorders and life threatening illness.

“These very sick kids get to escape their worries once a week when we come to visit,” says Mary Borkett, Discovery Arts organizer and volunteer. “Sick children don’t laugh much, they’re sick to their stomachs from chemo and so very tired. Our group brings joy, light and laughter to these often forgotten children,” she explains.

During the once-a-week visits to various OC hospitals, volunteers bring fantasy costumes for the young patients to transform into characters like the all-powerful Spiderman or beautiful Princess Jasmine, to sing, dance, play and just be a kid for a change.

So where does the volunteering come into play? Your kids can create a Bedside Adventure Kit. Discovery Arts supplies the blank canvas box, and your kids decorate and fill the box with arts and craft supplies. The boxes are then delivered to the children.

Kids can also learn to give back by saving their money and buying a costume for the patients—who adore the outfits so much, they’re often found sleeping in them.

You could even have a pizza party at home or at a fave pizza joint to “raise dough” for the org.

As adults we appreciate our health, but teaching our kids this also may be a great lesson to learn early. Kids want, want and want for what they don’t have, but showing them what they do have might go a long way.
